Roles.

My role in our group is mainly being the photographer, the reason for this is because I take photography A level, therefore I have more experience in working with the camera and I'm often doing photoshoots anyway so I'l enjoy taking the photos for the album cover etc. Although I would be capturing the images, the whole group wall also have a say in the type of photos and locations, I feel we should all have a fair contribution to each part, I will just try to reflect on the appearance we are looking for when taking the photos. Also, I have my own camera therefore I will be working with something I am familiar and used to. I look forward to taking the photos. Another part I would like to be part of is framing shots and helping out with the filming. I think me and tre will both be part of this as Daniel will be the one being filmed during the performance shots. We will also probably use my camera because in the previous year, when we used it for our thriller sequance, the quality came out really well, it also allows us to play around with the focus. Also, I may take part in the narrative depending on what we decide to do.

I will probably end up with a large amount of photos from the shoot so we have a good variety to choose from. I will then be able to create a contact sheet like the one on the side of Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers. These are negatives however my photos will be digital. By creating a contact sheet we are able to view how good they well look printed out although each image will be quite small.

Tre will be mostly working on the ending, reason being because he is good at working out the editing programs and when working with him last year, he picked it up well and there was a good outcome. The fact that he has had the most previous experience on Finalcut or iMovie, allows us to be able to rely on him when it comes to editing, obviously we will all have our say on how shots should be edited, but he mostly be the one putting it all together and doing the technical parts such as cutting the shots, the transitions, the effects. He is easy to work with and can usually succeed in putting across what we want it the editing.

Daniel will be involved in the performance shots, this is because he is part of a band. This highly benefits us, also because of the genre of his band which plays rock music. We can use his instruments and his group to film and act like the famous artists of our music video. This means they will have to really take on the role of having alot of confidence and performing just like the artists we see in the videos. Their performance has to be believable and their lip syncing needs to be right. The group needs to feel comfortable infront of the camera and really get into the music, mimicing the artists we see. For the narrative part of our video, Daniel will probably help with the filming because the band is not needed for this part. His and everyone elses will be contributed into what we do.

Initial Thoughts.

Here is a video showing our discussion of what we want out music video to look like and our Initial ideas.

Peer Assessment

This is an assessment sheet which was filled out by another peer who looked at my blog. By doing this it gave me an idea of the stage I'm at as I was given a mark out of 20 and a grade. The fact that the levels were broke down into different catagories helped me realise my lower points. This assesment tell me that I need more layouts, drafting and storyboarding however we haven't really covered this part of our planning yet. It also tells me that I need to prove my communication skills. Not only does this assessment tell me what I need to improve on, but it also gives me more confidence in the fact that it highlights the areas which I am good at.

Assessment TME 24/09/11

Elenya,

WWW: - Your magazine advert analysis is simply excellent! WOW! Very good insight supported by very good examples. Your record label entry is also good.

EBI - You need to make sure you complete all the missing entries, particularly the audience research ones. It seems you are still spending far too much time on one or two entries and not spreading your effort across all the areas you need to. What this means is that you're not going to be getting the marks you clearly are capable of getting, because you're just not covering all the elements you need to within the research. Come and talk to myself or MCU if you need help organising your time.

Because you've not covered many of the entries unfortunately: GRADE - PR.

Analysis of Magazine Album Advertisements.

THE HORRORS Magazine Advertisement:
This is an advertisement for the album Strange House, by The Horrors. The band is the main focus point, seated in the middle. The majority of them are dressed in black. The clothes seem related to quite a darker indie style, with skinny jeans and blazer like jackets also adding a sense of safistication. However there is one wearing white, making him an outcast to the others, suggesting that he is possibly the lead singer, having more of a lead role amongst them as he is in contrast to them. The set of the photo appears in a house, relating to the album name 'Strange House'. It is quite poshly furnished. They are seated on a sofa with curtains either side draped near enough identically.
The curtains look silky with patterns decorated over them giving a glamurous appearance.
The animals head hung up in the center emphasises the symmetry in the composition of this image. This object indicates possibly wealth, having these head stereotypically seen in grand houses, hung above fire places etc. Also I feel it adds more of a vintage look combined with the curtains and the tone of the photo. Whilst briefly researching the music videos for this bad to get an idea of the type of music they play, I noticed this animal head is included in their video for 'She is a new thing'.
The photo is black and white, seeming gloomy and washed out. The texture is grainy making the image seem hazey. The fact that the colour is monotoned, with the decor being quite vintage and old fashioned with the subjects also dressed in black, with big volumized hair and thick eyeliner, creates this gothic appearance. The title of the band and the album name is enlarged above the image. The size of this font is bigger than the rest because it is what the advert is advertising. This is the same for the album release date also standing out along the bottom, this is so we are likely to read it. Below this is a small collection of positive reviews for the band, specifically chosen to make the album look good and help to persuade you to buy it with high ratings such as '10/10' and '4/5'. This font size is smaller because it is not as important where as getting across the album and the release date is the main priority of the advert, the reviews just make the band look better. Other than advertising the albums release date, they also add along the bottom the months they are touring and a website where you can access tickets. As well as this is their myspace page.

NIRVANA Album Magazine Advertisement:

This is advertising Nirvanas Live At Reading Album. This advert contains no specially set up photoshoot for the albums promotion like the previous. It is a shot taken from their Reading performance and is the same photo which is used as the album cover, linking the advert to the album which is presented at the side. The effect of this familiarises us with the appearance of the album which therefore lets us know what to look for when searching for the album, we will then recognize this image. It shows Nirvana on stage, with Kurt Cobain in mid air, jumping with his guitar, representing their stage presence as being wild and eratic, reflecting what is seen in their live performances with actions such as throwing around guitars and jumping on equipment, therefore really engaging into their music. This is emphasising the nature of the band but also a feel of the type of performance they give and what we are expecting to be seeing if we purchase this DVD/CD. This type of image of a band performing is quite a common convention of the rock genre. When we think of rock we are automatically expecting to see the band playing at one point.

The main over powering colours of this advert are black and yellow. The reason for this is because black and yellow are the associated colours of Nirvana, it is like their trade colours. The bands logo is placed on the left. This narrow thick font is also associated with Nirvana. This font is used below the image for the availability and the release date as well as the title. I noticed that in the description, the words 'legendary' and 'pristine' are used to make the album sound better, to make it look more appealing. There is also a hmv logo placed in the corner showing us where the product is available.

Fall Out Boy Album Magazine Advertisement:

This is advertising Fall Out Boy's album 'Believers Never Die'. An album combining all of their greatest hits, the reason for this is because the band split up, so their most successful hits is put into one album as a kind of celebration and collection. The album name 'Believers Never Die' representes the fans and believers of Fall Out Boy always being devoted to the band and also their music living on despite the fact that the band are no longer together. The art of the advert is illustrative. It's a drawing of two skeletons laying down on the floor together. This could represent the seperation of the band, how the group has in a way died, even though Fall Out Boy came to an end, their friendship and remains still excist. The fact that the bones are in entwined possibly reinforces how close their frienships were but also possibly the connection with their fans. Even though they are no longer together their excistance lives on through their music. Their music is all that remains, and what is left behind are bones, portraying the end of Fall Out Boy. Surrounding the skeletons are objects such as converses, guitar and a record. These are musically associated instruments and having the guitar and converses enforce this connection with the band, being stereotypical items owned in a rock band. The poster is coloured in blue, creating quite a sad, gloomy atmosphere which relates to the fact that the band have split up and the mood likely to be felt by their fans. I noticed that this advert is simular to 'The Horrors' in the fact that above and below the image is faded into black, also with the Nirvana advertisments background being black. This shows that the colour black is quite a common typical convention in rock genre. The text is white, contrasting to tthe background which makes it stand out. There is the use of bold writing for the bands name, date of release, the rating by Kerrang, it is also bigger than the rest giving it more importants. This advertisement is different from the rest because it also includes a small variety of the songs included in the album, these are probably the bands most well known tracks.

CD Cover Research.

Escape the Fate Album Cover:
This album cover portrays a very stereotypical representation of the appearance of the sort of person who would listen to this rock music genre. This photo has a sense of symmetry. Her lips are centered in the composition, acting as the main focus point of the image. The fact that her lipstick is a bright glossy red draws our attention to the image, standing out against her pale skin. By including this harsh redness, it associates her lips with lust and passion, this is reinforced with the fact that the subject is a female and her lips are quite full and plump suggesting a kind of sexual connotation. However quite a violent representation is also relates to this red, as mentioned previously in a Bring Me The Horizon video. Red suggests quite a violent, sinful, bloody aspect and the tone of red used is a very strong blood red. The fact that the lipstick is smudged slightly corrupts this beauty and makes her appear more rough, hinting at a rebellious side. Her lips are positioned quite loosely, allowing us to see her teeth, also seeming quite clenched suggesting anger and frustration linking back to the red lipstick. She has a piercing through her lip as well as a nose piercing, this body modification is common for people to have who listen to this genre of music, as well as the tattoo on her neck. They show individuality and a way to express themselves. It creates a certain impression or an image and distinguishes them from everyone else. It also in a way puts them in a social group, with people into metal and rock etc, stereotypically having a lot of piercings. Her makeup is smudged down her face portraying quite a destructive mood. Smudged makeup suggests she has been crying which relates to the stereotypical view of girls being quite emotional. This album cover shows a mix of emotions -sadness, anger and possibly a sexual relation. The fact that her eyes are hidden takes away a lot of her identity making us quiet intrigued as to who she is and why she is in that state. Her hair is black and combining this with the red lipstick gives quite a gothic appearance.

Asking Alexandria Album Cover:
This is the album cover for Asking Alexandrias album 'Reckless and Relentless'. The image is black and white with contrasting tones. The texture of the photo is quite gritty relating to the dirty, broken set. This emphasises the destructive appearance of the photo, with the smashed tv and the rubble on the floor suggesting that the music in the album is quite heavy and violent. The set is very corrupt and damaged, all these aspects relate to the album name 'Reckless and Relentless'.

This concept is also portrayed in the body langauge of the women. She is bent over and slouched forward giving off this careless attitude. She is making eye contact with the camera, expressing quite a hateful, viscious look reinforcing this attitude. She is not wearing much, allowing alot of her body to visible. The fact that she is bent over emphasises and exposes her cleavage adding a sexual suggestion, this is reinforced in the stap of her top falling down her arm making her appear ungraceful and rough. What she is wearing and how she is presenting herself makes her look quite like a hooker in a way, expressing a sense of no self respect and once again linking back to this carelessness. Her attitude and appearance is depicted in the set around her -distructive and reckless.

The band name 'Asking Alexandria' is placed in the top left of the frame, fitting in with the composition and where the subjects are in the frame. They have the same text used to present their name. Both titles are exactly the same and also their album title for their previous album 'Stand Up and Scream' has the album name placed in a smaller font bellow the band name as does their new album.

The Dead Lay Waiting Album Cover:
This is the album cover for the band The Dead Lay Waiting's album called 'Almost Heaven'. This album is composed so that the subject is in the center, consuming the frame. The subject is the centre of attention, being upfront and full on as if it is pressing up against the cover. It is as if the subject is trapped inside. The fact that their hands are pushing against the surface suggests panic and fear, but also creates an interaction with the the audience as their hands are reaching out to us. The name of the band is 'The Dead Lay Waiting', this is reinforced in the cover because it is as if the person is trying to get to us, lurking in the mist behind the frosty looking glaze. As if they are creeping around in the fog waiting for our time of living to end. The colours of the photo are quite dull and washed out, consisting of mainly black, blue and white tones creating this cold, chilling atmosphere. This is reinforced in the texture of the photo, being quite scratchy and grainy, similar to the appearance of a frosty surface. The fact that the album consists of these cold tones relates to the album name 'Almost Heaven' because the opposing side is hell which is thought to be hot, with us automatically thinking of warm red tones, this album cover depicts the opposite because the album name is associating with heaven. The person has holes dripping with blood in the centre of their  hands which has been smeared upwards against the surface. These holes show bodily marks in the locations which correspond to the crucifixion of Jesus, his wounds are being portrayed in this image, therefore the album has a religious link which is also suggested in the album name 'Almost Heaven'. Following on from this I realised that the album cover may be depicting the state of purgatory. The colour black consumes the bottom sides of the photo suggesting the dark evilness creeping up behind the subject. This colour is a convention of the rock genre. The band title and album cover is placed over this so that it is more visible and the colour of the font is coordinated with the tones of the rest of the photo. The opacity of the text seems slightly opaque relating to this ghostly appearance and the writing is quite scratchy and old fashioned. The title is placed in the bottom centre in line with the composition of the subject, balancing out the photo.

Results from questionnaire.

My Questionnaire based on my genre.

Theory - Carol Vernallis.

Vernallis' theory centres around 4 key concepts that all relate to the way a music video is constructed:
  • Narrative
- Carol Vernallis says that a video is a visual response to the music, that there is no necassary balance betweeen the narrative and the performance. She claimes the structure of the video may be disjointed, having a lot of incomplete and sometimes obscure paths although the visual hooks create continuity. That the order of shots are unconventional as the shots shift freely between each one. Something drives the video forward, but often it is not the narrative. It could be the music, the  performance, a  mixture or some other element. There may bot be clear closure at the end  and the video itself may create questions that don't actually have answer.
  • Editing
- In the editing she says that editing may match a musical phrase or a beat. Also that the video may break the rule of continueity editing. That there may be alot of editing which over powers more unnoticable editing. The fancy editing is more seen rather than the others for example, you would notice an extreme jumps in time or a graphic match rather than a smooth transition or match on action.
  • Camera Movement and Framing
- She thinks extreme shots are very common out of all shot type as well as establishing shots and close ups. Also that the style of framing and movement may run through out the video which therefore makes that look distinctive to that video. The camera may move in time with the music and the lyrics.
  • Diegesis
- The diegesis may be revealed slowly and there may be gaps in the audiences understanding of the diegesis. The character or object may move in time with the music, also some frames may be more important that others.

Theory - Andrew Goodwin.

Andrew Goodwin identifies 5 key aspects of music videos that we the audience should look out for which are:
  • Thought beats – Seeing the sound
- The structure of the song must be taken into consideration by looking at the choruses and verses. Secondly look at the voice of the song because artists voices are extremely unique and can form an identification that works well with star image. Thirdly, songs can be seen as stories and the artist as the storyteller therefore creating a sense of communication the artist and the listeners.

Andrew says that people should edit on the beat of the music, in order for the pace of the video match the pace of the songs. However you can also edit through the lyrics of the song. Andrew thinks that whatever is being said in the lyrics of the song should be depicted through what's on the screen.
  • Narrative and Performance
- Narrative and performance work hand in hand it makes it easier for the audience to watch over and over without loosing interest

  • Star quality
- Artists want to look unique in order to stay current and to be remember by the audience. This image develops over time and plays a big part in the production process of music videos.
  •  Relation of Visuals to Song
There are three different ways videos promote a song, through Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.
  1.  Illustration - This is split into three parts, firstly is how we edit the video. Andrew Goodwin says that people should edit on the beat of the music, in order for the pace of the video match the pace of the songs. However you can also edit through the lyrics of the song. Andrew thinks that whatever is being said in the lyrics of the song should be depicted through what's on the screen. Lastly, is the Band or artist image would match the expectations of the audience.
  2. Amplification - Andrew thinks that if film cuts on and off beat it and that emphasises certain features. Another is a certain story being used in the video that may not be used when reading the lyrics out by themselves.
  3. Disjunction - Video cuts off the beat that happen occasionally and too often it is a sign of a badly made music video. The second part is the lyrical part of the video. Sometimes the images do not relate to what the lyrics are saying, However this in generally used by already established artist because they can afford to take the risk. Lastly is the artists taking up an image that is nothing like what is being said in the lyrics and the the artists wearing the opposite of what is expected of them to wear.
  • . Technical Aspects of Music Video
- Technical aspects hold the music together through use of camera work, movement, angle, mise- en -scene editing, sound and special effects etc.

Theories - Bordwell and Thompsons.

Editing from one image following to another can create meaning as we move from each shot, it creates a connection between the subject and what they are looking at.
Here are the catogories in which they based their theories on, these shots link in different ways and identify relationships between shots:
Spatial - Creating the space within the scene between people and objects.
  • Continuity editing and establishing shot
  • "Kuleshov Effect" There is no establishing shot but audience still know where it is set
-The 'Kuleshov Effect' shows how editing can work to create meaning although there are many more subtle things happening when we look at the transitions from one shot to the next.
  • Cross cutting or parallel editing in different locations.
Temporal - The editing and time of each shot in the scene.
  • Order of things can be changed by reverse shots
  • The story/plot can change to interrupt normal order of time
  • The events during the story can be altered through an eclipse
  • Continuity editing - an event happening only tends to happen once.
Rhythmic - The rhythmic relations between one shot and another.
  • Different shots and cuts have different effects on audience.
  • All shots are the same length
  • Shots can become shorter and shorter
  • Shots with good length are steadier
  • Longer or quick rapid shots
Graphic - Use of visual and moving images.
  • Graphic Match - Shots link together by graphic similarities
  • Graphic Dis-continuity - Playing around with colour, footage, mise en scene.
  • Graphic Continuity: Centre of interest is constant through out cuts, maintaining lighting level, avoiding strong colour clashes.
The shots have different "Pictorial Qualities' which include patterns of light and dark, fine and shape, volume and depth, movement and stasis which can be used to create ‘smooth continuity’ or ‘abrupt contrast’

This is an example of graphic editing taken from the film "Psycho"directed by Alfred Hitchcock who was a fan of this type of editing. Looking at this sequance of shots we notice there is a conistancey of the circular shape using the shower head, plug hole and the victims eye.

Bring Me The Horizon - Pray For Plagues.

Narrative of the video:
This lyrics in this video are about a girl who has to sell sex to survive. Kind of a shout out to the darkness that exists in this world, that people often refuse to realize. It also has references to the bible with the song being about plagues, quoting in the lyrics
'So clap your hands to the sound
Of every first born dying now.
Watch the rivers turn to blood,
Death will stand where life once stood.'
The meaning in the song is very dark, you could say it's anti christ however I think it is more telling us that it is time for a plague after all the sins that have been committed in the world.

Mise en scene:
Black is a consistant colour which consumes the frame with a lot of darkness. All the subjects are surrounded by this harsh blackness, an absence of light through the whole video. Even though the subjects are lit up, the surroundings don't take in any light. It is complete darkness. Giving them no particular set and allows us to just focus on whatever is being shown in the frame because this plain black gives us no destraction. This blackness also fits in with the genre because dark colours are associated with the rock, metal genre. It is also hides what's in the darkness, covering up Oli when he steps back, making him blend in with the surroundings as he is wearing a black top too. He is only visible when the flickering light is shined on him. This flickering, flashing light creates a manic, eratic mood, also possibly quite destructive, it is only focused on him. WIth him only being visible in the light and otherwise not seen creates a connection with darkness, suggesting that Oli is a dark character. As well as black being an over powering colour in this video, red is also quite consistant too alongside this. The colour red can symbolise; sin, guilt, pain, passion, blood, and anger which highly relates to the meaning of the song including words such as 'Death' and 'Blood'. Black and red are also very gothic colours once again relating to the rock genre. Emphasising this red blood relating approach is the edited blood splats and the red heart. Black and red is the main colour scheme for this video. The disturbing girl in the video is also dressed in a red dress, automatically feeding us a sinful, evil, devil like representation. She moves very anxtiously, in a sharp, jagged, twitchy motion. Appearing derranged and distressed. She puts a bag or something over her head, shutting herself away from everything, she then carries on these stranged movements, as if she is being posessed and out of control, stretching and positioning herself awkwardly.

Camera Work:
The camera work in this music video is quite simple. The camera is placed still on a tripod positioned directly infront of Oli in a mid shot. He then moves about as well as having the flashing light on him. The effect of these two combined themselves create enough movement without the need of any motion of the camera. There are some birds eye view shots of the drummer and the girl moving about allowing us to see these subjects from above. There also some close up and long shots of the girl where once again the camera is stationary. Only now and again are purposly shakey shots emphasising this manic, destructive mood.

Conventions of a Music Video.

  • Music videos consist of a constant flow of shots, the pace often depends on the tempo of music. If the song is upbeat there is often a fast pace, with a slow beat the pace may be slowed down and more relaxed. The reason why these shots don't have that long of a screen time is to avoid viewer fatigue. By including a variety of shot distances and camera techniques it adds interest to the video. There are usually around 3 different sets used in one video, and the shots will bounce back and forth from them, this is done by jump cuts put in whilst editing allowing a sudden change from one scene to another. Shots like the crane shot is often used especially when stages are involved where the muscicians are performing because it allows the camera to hover around the stage and get easy access to capture what is happening. The types of shots that are used can depend on the type of music video is.
  • Lip Syncing is an important convention. The editors of the video have to make sure the lips are in sync with the words in the music other wise it looks odd if they are out of time. Whilst lip syncing the musicions have to make sure that their miming looks believable also, they have to portray the same amount of emotion that is put in the way they expressed their words when recording vocals. They also should reflect the right emotion that the narrative of the song is giving off. If the song is based on something sad, then they shouldn't really be laughing and smiling in the video.
  • Editing also includes things like split screens, CGI effects, the choice of diegetic sound and transitions between the shots etc.
  • Mise en scene includes the props, costume and location. The props depend on the genre and the type of song for example if it is a rock band music video where they are performing, props such as instruments, equipment and lighting would be needed. Costume also depends on the genre and what they are representing in the video. Location reflects the narrative and also what the lyrics relate to. The mise en scene involves different types of lighting for different genres, like rock videos would include dark lighting compared to pop videos which would have bright colourful lighting.
  • The performance in the video is important, the muscisians should look enthusiastic and their expressions should look realistic.

Assessment 11/9/11 TME

www
- Some very good analysis of the music videos. With specific examples used to illustrate your points.

- A relatively low amount of waffle!

- Good visual examples included for most of your posts.

- You have made an excellent effort on some of your posts, including screen grabs to illustrate your points. Keep this up, and if you can, do it more, it will pay dividends!

- Range of different music videos these are clearly well chosen and you've included youtube versions on each entry. This is good.

EBI.
- Make sure you complete all entries! There are some which should have been completed by this deadline. Check your list.

- Check your entries over before you submit them, you use the word "bolky" by which I think you mean blocky?

-One way to do the analysis which may provide more insight is to divide it up into the micro-elements, and then come up with an example for each of them.

-It would make it slightly easier to read if your do break up your entries into more paragraphs.

Analysis of Rock Music Video: Architects - Day In Day Out.

Contact Sheet:

Analysis of a music video. Ed Sheeran - The A Team.

Analysis of 2nd Rock Video. Asking Alexandria - To the stage.

The beginning of this music video starts with opening credits making it alot like a film:
These credits are presented in square blocks making the titles quite bolky, they are also moving quite jagged therefore giving off a destructive unsettled look. The colour of the credits are white with black letters inside. By having white credits, it creates a contrast to the backround allowing it to become more visible. They also flicker and contain quick scratches and grains, complimenting this is a crackling sound overlayed ontop of the repetative high pitched piano building up tension towards the continuos shots following on from this. I noticed that the sound of the track is in sync with the changing of credits. When the same key is hit on every few notes, we are presented with a new credit, they all have the same screen time also. After these credits we see an overall flash back of the night showing the band enjoying themselves, drinking and fooling about, I noticed near the end of this sequance we see more drinks being consumed, and only one shot of the girl which leaves us wondering who she is because we see her last. It is giving us a brief interpretation of the video without giving away too much. This is portrayed through a quick flashing, fast pace flow of shots. The changing of shots are in time with the beat also. The song used in this quick sum up of the night is not the actual song for the music video. I really like this idea of including a type of flash back sequance because it is really manic with a constant flow of shots making the video more exciting avoiding viewer fatigue.

During the opening there is a really well composed shot edited in very slow motion in the background of the credits, the tablet is dropped and the camera captures its fall. They have slowed this shot down so we are able to watch the tablet clearly fall and turn through mid air. Here is another shot in the middle of the video involving the tablet once being dropped in the drink which I though was really well shot and composed and once again editing in slow motion to capture all the detail.
By including a tablet, they are relating to the narrative of the video as it is based on Danny Worsnops drink being spiked so the girl can then take advantage of his drugged up state because he's weak and vunerable at this point, she has control. The narrative relates to the song lyrics because in the first verse it says:
I'm out the door, I'm on my ass again like every night before
I'm off the wall, out of my f****** mind, I'm out of control
I'll be the end of her, I'm in her head and in control
She's let me in, now take a sip and let the show begin
These lyrics reflect Dannys intoxicated state shown in the video, however it also tells us that he is in control of her head whilst out of his possibly suggesting that her actions will haunt her, that she won't get away with what she's done and this shadow of guilt will linger and he will take his revenge and 'be the end of her' which could be the reason why at the end of this video it says 'to be continued..'

After the opening sequance and the flashback of the night, we are shown a subtitle saying '30 minutes later..' setting us back before all this happened. We are introduced to Danny and because he is the only person on screen for the first part of the story we automatically assume that he plays a big role. In this scene we hear dialogue, there is a sound bridge from the blank subtitled screen to when we are shown the phone call. The fact that the dialogue says

This video consists of alot of fast contionuos shots, the speed is really built up near the end. Whilst filming they would of had to take alot of shots from different angles to create this hectic fast pace flow of shots when editing. This is like the climax of the video, where it all ends up. Danny is in trouble and falling out of consciousness.

Analysis of Rock Video. Bring Me The Horizon - It Never Ends.

I chose to analyse this video because of the editing, it is clear that this music video is full of a variety of different types of editing which near enough makes up the majority of the video and how it is presented. However I chose this because it also challenges the stereotypical interpretation of a rock video involving the band playing and instrumental shots etc. This video strictly followers a narrative focusing on the main vocalist Oli Sykes who plays the patient and only including the accompanied band members as characters who are part of this story.

Narrative of the video discribed by the main vocalist Oliver Sykes:

When looking into this video I discovered the meaning behind the narrative, that it was trying to portray all the set backs that the band faced whilst getting to the point they are now at. Having the vampire characters constantly chasing behind him represents his struggles and people who were seen as barriers to reaching his success as he mentions people like drug dealers or buisness managers. They are all shown as the less pleasant characters which Oli is trying to escape from and by throwing out a body part as shown in the video represents him giving part of him self to them, how they in a way consumed him with all these temptations of drugs, sex etc. In the video we see the nurse throwing the body part out to the vampires as a destraction so he can escape however they manage to catch up with him towards the end and take over which suggests that these negative aspects that have faced the individuals in the band were quite overpowering and a struggle to escape from. I think it is clever to involve a narrative with a personal meaning and the way they have portrayed it is quite creative and different whilst also following a kind of dark evil theme by including these vampires and gore which relates to the image of the band being a rock/metal/screamo band, they have kept to the right image.

What we notice about this video is that there is the use of a green screen, so when editing the video together they are able to put in the background what the creators want which is suitable to the scene. It would be edited so that the foreground shot was placed over the backround shot. Therefore the actor in this case Oli Sykes, would of had to perform as if he was in this insidence, as if he was in this actual place in order for it to look right. For the green screen shots to be successful they would of had to make sure that the set had the correct lighting and that the subject was wearing the right clothing which was not simular to the green screen otherwise he would of blended in with the backround.

These images show them setting up the lights for the green screen and them filming Oli, we see his top is purposfully a contrasting colour from the green screen.

Here is a video showing the footage being film on green screen:
Here is what it looks like after it's edited together and the background is placed on:

During this video we are shown a variety of sets. The forest in which the ambulance is driving through seems to give off quite a stereotypical feel of a forest being quite scary and dark at night, where when looking into the distance nothing is visible, only darkness lingers through the gaps of the trees. We also see a moon as well which makes the scene quite haunting, relating to the vampire characters. It's also quite gloomy and foggy and the style of the backround used is also quite animated, especially the ambulance so it appears not so realistic which I think was done intentionally, the fact that the movement of the ambulance is so bouncey and crazy also reinforces this but it also emphasises the urgency.

Not only are we presented with a forest setting but also 3 others - A snowy scene, a western type scene and a cloudy scene. The reason for this is to represent Oli being in a dreamy state as if he is floating through different places, as if his spirit is some place else, somewhere more peaceful than the manic scene he is really in. It shows the side of him which is drifiting in and out of contoiusness, this is reinforced by his facial expressions which appear to be quite emotionless, his words seem to have no enthusiasm in them compared to the screaming which we hear.
