EFFORT - PR (though the year 12 into 13 post is GD)

My progress from Year 12 into Year 13 in Media.

From experiencing year 12 media, I am now comfortably set in and feel confident in my work and working with the people around me. I feel that I have never really struggled with this subject as along the way I found it quite easy to pick up things and step in to filming as I have never really experienced the videoing side of the camera as I have only previously been experienced in photography. The fact that I also study photography I think benefits my media work, I am aware of aspects such as the rule of thirds, high key and low key, also framing a shot. I also have the advantage of filming HD video quality on my camera and by using technical equipment that I am very familiar with, it makes it alot more easier for me and I feel more comfortable when working with something that I have had a lot of practice with. I know this because we used my camera when filiming our thriler opening sequance.

I feel that I am quite creative when coming up with ideas and that I can have an eye for what looks good and composing shots well. I can often be easily inspired however sometimes I find it hard to interpretate or explain the visual thoughts in my head. I also strive for perfection and can be quite fussy if something isn't the way I planned it to be which can result in me sometimes being quite controlling. I don't like to settle for anything less then the best it could be which can sometimes lead to be becoming quite fustrated in my work if it doesn't always turn out right. I usually focus on the bad points of my work which over powers the good aspects. I often only think about what I could of done better and emphasise on all the negative points therefore I usually have quite a low opinion on my work even though it may be successful to others.

I think I need to gain more confidence and have more of a positive outlook on things. However I did take on the main role in the filming of our 'In The Sun' remake -this challenged my confidence and performing skills. I am quite pleased with myself that I managed to pluck up the courage and achieve this despite my low confidence, I feel that the class helped me to achieve this also, they were all encouaraging and reassuring which made me feel more comfortable. It wasn't a negative atmosphere, yet more positive and enjoyable. All these aspects benefited my performing skills. Whilst taking on this task, I also had to film one shot. I had to track the camera backwards whilst tilting upwards, so I was tracking away from the subject who was walking towards the camera whilst at the same time tilting from their walking feet up to their head, still staying at the low angle I was tracking in. This shot appeared to be quite tricky because it was hard to avoid the camera shaking because of the backwards motion I was travelling in however I gave me more experience in filming difficult shots like this even if we had to keep retaking filming. I don't think I have much of a problem with filming different shot types, this is because the shots in our thriller opening was quite succesful. We didn't stick to the basics and I don't feel afraid to try out tricky shots in future as these shots make the overall look of what is being filmed more complex and keeps it interesting therefore it is good to explore all types of shots.

Following on from this I think that I am aware what the audience wants to see. A variety of shot types and camera movement keeps our eyes over whelmed with different views, the way we frame the shot alters the viewers interpretation of the video, what we choose to show can depict different views on the film because we have control of what the audience sees. Also if the length of each shot is short and quick it avoids viewer fatigue and makes the video more exciting. The way the film is edited also changes the appearance of the video and makes it interesting.

Reflecting on Music Video Challenge

My role in the making of our 'In The Sun' re-shoot was being the choreographer. This ment I had to learn all the dances in which the subjects in the video made. I had to observe the video closely in order to work out each movement. Following on from this I then had to mirror those movements myself, making sure I got each action correct in order to produce the most realistic, precise interpretation of the video as I could. Not only did I have to learn all the dances myself, I then had to teach them too the class, making sure that each partisapent knew the dance well enough for the scene in which they were involved in. This was quite difficult as I had to describe everything that I had just learn to the exact movement to others, also some people understood it more than others therefore I had to make sure everyone was going at the right pace and was comfortable and confident in everything they was doing, the ones which struggled where the one I spent more time with however I think most people catched on quick enough. There was not much trouble with co-operation.
As well as a choreographer, I also volunteered to be the lead singer which was involved in near enough every scene. As much as I lack confidence, I felt like I needed to help out the class and contribute to the task given. It was more of an easier option rather than having to have big debates about who the role would be given too so I thought I may aswell do it. It was a big role to play and challenged my confidence alot. I think I gradually loosened up and got more comfortable infront of the camera as we got further into it. I would of prefered to do it rather than having someone who really didn't want to which would then lead to the video seeming less effective and believable. Over all I enjoyed playing this role and working with everyone, it was fun and I probably would do it again if I'm not too embaressed by the outcome.
